The main theme of the Math Club is to have fun, to learn a lot of math, and to prepare for both the 2011-2012 Mathematical Olympiad Contest and the Applied Mathematics Challenge Contest in the Spring of 2012. The Math Club has sponsored competitive teams in Massachusetts for the last fifteen years and its students have made many outstanding accomplishments. The main benefit of The Math Club is the learning experience and supportive environment provided to the student. The main focus is placed on incremental progress and the building of a strong foundation in the students' academic career. The basic objective is help the math student to begin the process of how to think critically.
This past year the students again made achievements to a significant national level in the Math Olympiad Contest. The Math Club teams had 22 perfect score winners out of approximately 237 students with perfect scores nationwide from a total number of 151,000 participating students!
The students receive instruction via lectures providing a variety of math solving strategies and will obtain a deeper understanding to assist them in their future academic years. The format of the Math Club session includes open discussions of complex math concepts and presentations at the blackboard. Over the course of the program the students will receive over 35 hours of instruction, over 200 pages of work sheets, a Math Club stainless-steel water bottle, and registration in the Mathematical Olympiad Contest season.
In the Lexington community, Joe Quigley has sponsored math teams over the past fifteen years. He is an industry consultant in mechanical engineering, design and mathematical analysis. His efforts have resulted in a customized set of materials that prepares the math student for the rigors of the Math Olympiad contests at the elementary school and middle school levels. The Math Club operates from September through June in weekly practice sessions with supervision, instruction and coaching by Joe Quigley.
